Version: Storm glass Storm glass Baby storm glass

A fascinating tool used since the 1750s by sea travelers and even Charles Darwin! The Storm Glass will mysteriously predict the weather: visible crystals mean wet and foggy weather, a cloudy glass with small crystals will tell you a storm is on the way, and a clear glass means clear weather.

History

Captain of the British ship "The Beagle" in 1750, Admiral Fitzroy had the idea of mixing distilled water, ethanol, potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and camphor in a glass bottle to predict the weather during his sea voyages. It was by regularly taking observations of the shape and distribution of the crystals forming in the bottle as well as the prevailing weather that he discovered the mechanism he had just created. He noted his results in his famous book "Weather Book" on the observation and forecasting of weather, but it was in 1859, after a powerful storm, that the British Crown spread the use of the instrument to all ports and ships of the Empire.

Fun fact: it is notably cited in the works of Jules Verne and Victor Hugo.

How does it work?

More reliable than your weather app and simpler than observing the clouds and stars, the storm glass is (extremely) easy to use.

  • Place the storm glass in a cool spot, near a window but away from direct sunlight, heating, or air conditioning.
  • Observe whether or not crystals form.

Clear liquid: fair weather
Cloudy liquid: rainy (or even stormy) weather
Flaky crystals: snowy weather
Streaks of crystals: windy weather
The cloudier the liquid becomes and the more crystals it forms, the worse the weather gets.
The higher the crystals, the colder it is

Note: It will take 1 to 2 weeks after receipt for the storm glass to be fully operational. Be careful not to touch or move it, as this would distort its readings!
