History

Based on an idea by Galileo (1564-1642)

While looking for a way to accurately measure temperatures, Galileo discovered this fascinating method. He placed several spheres of exact weights into a cylinder filled with a specific liquid. He observed that the spheres rose or fell according to the ambient temperature. Thanks to this method, he was thus able to determine the correct temperature.

How does it work?

This thermometer is based on the principle discovered by Galileo that the density of a liquid varies according to temperature. Each glass sphere is precisely weighted by being partially filled with liquid. As the temperature rises, the liquid in the glass cylinder becomes less dense, causing the heavier spheres to gradually sink.

Place the thermometer on a flat surface. The sphere with the lowest temperature among those at the top of the cylinder indicates the exact temperature.

  • If all the spheres are floating at the top, the temperature is lower than that of the lowest floating sphere.
  • If all the spheres have sunk, the temperature is higher than that of the highest sphere.
